An inspired blend of jazz and classical sounds
Jazz and Strings presents a tribute to trumpeter Clifford Brown in a program that features guest trumpeter Claudio Roditi performing selections from the album Clifford Brown with Strings, including “Yesterday,” by Harbach/Kern, “Where or When,” by Rodgers/Hart and “Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man” by Kern/Hammerstein, plus original music by Clifford Brown and Claudio Roditi. Drummer Gene Bozzi, bassist Rick Rozie, and pianist / arranger Walter Gwardyak will team up with members of the HSO string section to bring the sounds of Clifford Brown to life.
“Clifford Brown with Strings” was a 1955 Emarcy album that featured “Brownie” on trumpet in a quintet of jazz masters, including Max Roach on drums. In addition to music from this beautiful album, the concert includes several of Clifford Brown’s own compositions, as well as a selection of Claudio Roditi’s original compositions from the Brazilian Jazz-Samba tradition.
